Reeva was found dead today, February 14. She was shot 4 times in the home of her boyfriend, The Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius, and even though police have not been able to identify the shooter, Pistorius was arrested. A 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene.
Some media reports indicated that the shooting may have been an accident caused by Pistorius mistaking his girlfriend for an intruder, there was speculation that the shooting could have been the result of a Valentine’s Day surprise gone wrong.
A police spokeswoman, Denise Beukes, said that the neighbors heard “shouting and screaming” coming from Pistorius’ house on Wednesday evening and that the police were called to the house on some previous occasions responding to reports of “a domestic nature”.
Officials in Pretoria said Pistorius, 26, was due to appear at a correctional services police court at 2pm local time but the case was later delayed until Friday. Reports suggest that Pistorius will undergo forensic medical tests at The Mamelodi Day Hospital.
“He will be bringing a bail application and we will be opposing bail.” There were no other suspects in the case.
Steenkamp, a well-known South African model, had been dating Pistorius since November 2012. She gave an interview to the Sunday Times in South Africa last week in which she described her boyfriend as:
“an impeccable man who always has her best interests at heart”.
Reeva Steenkamp was born on August 19, 1983. She grew up in a small suburb of Cape Town and moved with her parents to Port Elizabeth when she was a little girl. There, she went to convent school before she began to study law at the University of Port Elizabeth. She successfully completed her career and initially worked as a paralegal.
30-year-old Steenkamp was also an SA model, cover girl, and at the time of her death she was signed up to appear in the reality TV show Tropika Island of Treasure, in which teams of celebrities and contestants from the public compete in exotic locations for a grand prize. She appeared in magazines such as FHM and modeled for the jewelry company Sivana Diamonds. She was the face of Avon cosmetics in South Africa.
“I decided to take modelling seriously when I was named the face of Avon a few years ago,” she said. “I completed my degree, packed a single suitcase and headed off to Ice Models in Jozi and the rest is history.”
And on the side of her modeling career, she also set up an export company shipping “fresh produce” to “places like Mauritius and Saudi Arabia”.
Hagen Engler, FHM former editor, said he had known her since around the age of 15 in Port Elizabeth, where they grew up:
“She was the face of Avon or something like that,” he said. “She was an amazing girl, a really intelligent person. She was a businesswoman as well and I think she had a law degree. She went into the modeling industry and had a mature understanding of it. She had a good sense of humour, like a guy’s sense of humour. She was determined to succeed in the world of modeling and she really worked at it.”
