After his alcohol and drug abuse or as I like to call it his dark period Outfielder Josh Hamilton made his return in 2008 with the Texas Rangers and he was back stronger than ever after the unorthodox rehabilitation he underwent through actually orchestrated by who is now his father in law, I’m talking about Michael Chadwick father of Katie Chadwick and now Mrs. Hamilton.
His return to baseball hasn’t been easy but after several months of cleaning bathrooms back in 2006 he started slowly but surely going back to the game, literally! And now the 31 year old ball player is hotter than ever recently signing a contract with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Hamilton agreed in principal to a 5-year contract, worth $125 million! The deal is pending a physical though that I’m sure Hamilton will be looking forward to it; just as the 3 tests a week he used to give to his former coach Johnny Narron:
“I think he looks forward to the tests. He knows he’s an addict. He knows he has to be accountable. He looks at those tests as a way to reassure people around him who had faith.”
Although Hamilton has had a bit of a rocky path both in personal and professional life, he has had some amazing support on and off the field.
Hamilton’s teammates playing the midnful card chose to celebrate major events (such as the Rangers wins over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the 2010 American League Division Series, and again when they beat the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the 2010 American League Championship Series) with ginger ale instead of champagne. The Rangers repeated the celebrations with ginger ale the following postseason when they won their second consecutive pennant and reached the 2011 World Series.
All that is just inspiring and great but who really takes all the props here is wife who never left his side in spite of all the struggles. Josh and Katie’s relationship began when Josh returned to Raleigh, in 2002 and requested through a friend to see her. The two attended the same high school growing up, but were never close until Katie accepted his request in 2002.
They got married in 2004 Katie has a daughter, from a previous relationship, and together she and Hamilton have three daughters, Sierra Elise born August 22, 2005; Michaela Grace August 14, 2008; and Stella Faith September 9, 2011.
Hamilton exemplifies Muscular Christianity through the public expression of his Christian faith and wife Katie likes to put it this way:
“God told me he was going to give Josh baseball back, but it wasn’t going to be for baseball. It was going to be for something much bigger. He was going to give Josh a platform to help others.”
Good for them!
