Thomas Lloyd “Tom” Maynard was a 23-year-old Welsh cricketer who played for Surrey. He died on June, 2012. Maynard was dating model Carly Baker at the time of is death.
Maynard’s black Mercedes was stopped by police in London because of his erratic driving. Maynard fled the scene, he was electrocuted after stepping on a live track before his lifeless body was hit by a train.
The autopsy showed that Maynard had taken a cocktail of drink and drugs before he was killed. He was nearly four times the legal limit to drive and had also taken cocaine and ecstasy in the form of MDMA after a night out with England bowler Jade Dernbach and former Surrey captain Rory Hamilton-Brown, in the Ship pub in Wandsworth and later the Aura nightclub in Mayfair, before telephoning his girlfriend, Carly Baker, at 3:30am on the morning on Monday June 18th 2012, and telling her he was coming to see her.
Dr. Simon Poole, a forensic science pathologist, said that hair samples taken rlfrom Maynard’s body showed signs consistent with “habitual or daily use” over the three-and-a-half-month period in which the hair had grown.
In giving evidence, his girlfriend Carly Baker, his team mates and friends Jade Dernbach and Rory Hamilton-Brown, the latter of whom he shared a flat with, all claimed they did not know Maynard had been using drugs.
Maynard’s girlfriend Carly Baker said Maynard sounded very down and depressed on the phone.
“He said ‘you’re the only thing that makes me happy’, and he said it three times,” she added, “I tried to persuade him not to come because I was so worried that he was getting into his car after drinking.”
After Maynard had abandoned his car, she telephoned him “50 times”. At one point it was answered by the police officers who had first stopped him, with the name in the phone appearing as “Lady Tiger.”
Baker wrote on Twitter:
“My beautiful boyfriend Tom Maynard, I can’t cope with this. I love you always and forever. You meant everything to me. We will always be together. I love you Tom X.” She added: “You’re the most special man I have ever met. You made me the happiest girl. I love you always X.”
