Lennay Kekua, Manti Te’o “girlfriend” reportedly was a man, at least that was we heard yesterday, because today we know that the voice in Manti Te’o voicemails was indeed a girl’s voice and it belongs to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s cousin Tino Tuiasosopo and is about her that we are going to tell you all about it.
Phone records reveal more than 1,000 calls lasting over 500 hours between the former Notre Dame All-American and a number from the 661 area code, which Te’o believed to be Lennay Kekua, his not-so-real girlfriend, between May 11th and September 12th. We know that the girl on the other end of the line was fake. But the question is, who was Manti Te’o talking to?
Investigations show an unbelievable twist on this odd case. Milton Grimes, a lawyer for Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the alleged mastermind of the Te’o girlfriend hoax, revealed to the New York Daily News that the voice that Te’o believed belonged to Lennay Kekua, actually was Tuiasosopo using “a falsetto voice”!
Several voicemails that aired during Te’o’s interview with Katie Couric on Thursday, show a clear female voice. No one who has been in contact with Tuiasosopo before or since his effeminate voice was mentioned, which leaves two theories: he’s lying; or he’s incredibly talented with voice manipulating software.
The plot thickens, only one day after the report that found out that the voice of Te’o girlfriend was that of a man, the New York Post reported that a female cousin of the hoaxer was involved!
Relatives of Ronaiah told the newspaper that it was not Ronaiah who left Manti the disturbing voicemails, but instead it was his female cousin Tino Tuiasosopo.
“Tino is the girl that Manti has been talking to all these months,” said a Tuiasosopo cousin, according to the Post.
Tino is in her mid-20s, lives in Pago Pago, American Samoa. She graduated from Phineas Banning High School, in Wilmington, CA. Tino works with her father, Bob Tuiasosopo, in his construction company. She is described by relatives as “vivacious and flirtatious”, but she is a regular church goer. Her mother is Maria, Tino has one older brother Andrew and a younger sister Siva.
A person identified as Tino Tuiasosopo’s cousin said: “There is no doubt whatsoever that it’s Tino.”
Although the quality of the recording is not great on all of the clips, the voice does sound feminine. Even Good Morning America sent the tapes to four audio experts, who were unanimous, and said that the voice on the tapes was that of a woman.
“That’s the way [Tino] cries when she’s feeling sorry for herself. Its her, that’s the voice,” a Tuiasosopo source exclusively tells the New York Post.“Tino is the girl that Manti has been talking to all these months,” said a Tuiasosopo cousin.
A Tuiasosopo relative thinks that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s lawyer, Milton Grimes, told the New York Daily News that his client was the voice because his client “is determined to take the rap,” according to the Post.
Ronaiah Tuiasosopo allegedly had true feelings for the athlete, according to a Jan. 24, 2013 TMZ report. Sources told the website that he used the female character of Lennay Kekua to express his “intense feelings” for Te’o.
Te’o also revealed he received a Twitter message from Tuiasosopo apologizing for the hoax and saying he accepts the “consequences to the pain he has caused…”
